Premonición

extra information

Premonición of the Spanish-Belgian composer, violinist and music theatre maker Saskia Venegas Aernouts is a programmatic piece that depicts the emotional struggle of a person that is facing a painful life situation, the passing  of a loved one. Something in her tells her that there will be no solution and although not all possibilities of healing are excluded, she already notices that the end is near. The fear of loss, of death is unbearable and she does everything she can to create some hope.

The piece has contrasting textures that interrupt each other as a metaphor for the inner discord that arises when we try to silence our instinct not willing to face the future. Woven along the structure of the piece we can hear pieces of the first part of a lullaby that reflects the love and care of the character towards the person she is about to lose. These caring feelings are interrupted with outbursts of pain, anger, fear and hopelessness. One emotion leads to the other and despite being extreme and antagonistic expressions, they are all intertwined.

The piece was originally written for violin and arranged for viola on the occasion of the Peter Benoit Fund Autumn Concerto 2020.
