Cécile McLorin Salvant
Ogresse
Cécile McLorin Salvant is literally hors catégorie. With her clear, instantly recognisable voice, she explores the most diverse genres and disciplines. This versatility resonates in her new, ambitious project Ogresse, for which she wrote both the libretto and the music. A monstrous woman lives alone in a forest, far from the human world she has fled. One day, a man from the village tries to seduce and kill her. This dark parable balances between Eros and Thanatos, with a hint of gothic fantasy and a nod to Grimm's fairy tales.
The music for jazz ensemble and string quartet meanders between baroque and Broadway, jazz and cabaret. At the crossroads of all these influences McLorin Salvant stands sovereign as a narrator and an incarnation of all characters. An extraordinary allegory about the paradoxes of love, power, gender and diversity.
