With the upcoming spring, Klarafestival 2021 is quickly taking shape. A little while ago we promised – with Es ist noch nicht alles verloren! (All is not lost!) – a reassuring and hopeful festival with the relationships between people and their environment at its heart. So it’s time for an update!

Israelis Brünnlein - geistliche Madrigale zu 5 Stimmen und Generalbass

Like Samuel Scheidt and Heinrich Schütz, Johann Hermann Schein was able to harness the emotional power of contemporary Italian music in his own compositions. As cantor at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig and thus one of Bach’s illustrious predecessors, Schein combined the southern idioms with those of his own Lutheran world. His magnum opus Israelis Brünnlein, a collection of five-voice madrigals from 1623, is splendid evidence of his ability to effortlessly combine polyphonic style with baroque expressiveness, creating an ingenious wellspring of musical eloquence.

 

Due to a corona infection, the concert originally planned for this evening at 20:00 cannot take place. In agreement with Collegium Vocale Gent and Flagey, we decided to replace Dolcissima Mia Vita - Carlo Gesualdo’s Fifth Book of Madrigals by Israelis Brünnlein - madrigals by Johann Herman Schein. This performance by Collegium Vocale Gent, conducted by Philippe Herreweghe, was recorded at the end of February 2021 in the Karmelietenkerk in Ghent.
