Yannick Nézet-Séguin becomes Music Director of the Philadelphia Orchestra for an initial term of five years beginning September 1, 2012.
At 35 years old, Yannick Nézet-Séguin is one of the most highly respected and sought-after conductors on todays international classical music scene and has been widely praised by audiences, critics and artists alike for his musicianship, dedication, and charisma. Yannick Nézet-Séguin is Music Director of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and in June 2010 was appointed Music Director Designate of the Philadelphia Orchestra with immediate effect and will take up the full title of Music Director from the 2012-2013 season. He is also Principal Guest Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Artistic director and Principal conductor of the Orchestre Métropolitain (Montreal).
Come to see this rising star conductor during the KlaraFestival at Bozar Brussels on September 9, 2010 to lead his other top-notch orchestra the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra through the daring score of Mahlers 2nd symphony. Since in Mahlers thinking death could not be the end of everything, he expanded his symphonic poem Todtenfeier into a full-length resurrection symphony. The main emphasis of the work lies in the final movement, which paints an overwhelming picture of the Last Judgment and the Resurrection. Fear gives way to exaltation. There is no punishment and no reward, Mahler wrote, just an overpowering feeling of love.
