KlaraFestival concerts
Klara will be broadcasting all lunchtime and evening concerts performed at Bozar, Flagey and De Munt, either live or later. You can hear the lunchtime concerts at 4 pm on Café Zimmermann while the evening concerts are broadcast live. Your hostess is Lut Van der Eycken. Exceptions to this are: the concert Liszt/O Death with Claire Chevallier and Jan Decorte that will be broadcast at a later date; Via Dolorosa, the concert on 3 September, which can be heard on 9 September on In de loge; Benjamin Britten’s The War Requiem, performed at Bozar at 5 pm on 11 September and broadcast by Klara that same evening at 8 pm.

Before and between the evening concerts Klara will be talking to performers and welcoming guests and music-lovers who will be commenting on the performances throughout the evening. Notable guests include: Tim Van Steenbergen (1/9), Cathy Berx (5/9), Joke van Leeuwen (6/9), Jean Blaute (7/9), Edel Maex (8/9), Geert Van Istendael (12/9), Jean-Paul Van Bendegem (13/9), Jan Caeyers (14/9), Mia Doornaert (15/9) and Frank Deboosere (16/9).

The KlaraFestival will also feature in many other Klara programmes. Here is a brief summary:

ESPRESSO & BREDE OPKLARINGEN

The evening programmes Espresso and Brede Opklaringen will bring you daily reactions, news from the fringe, viewpoints and many free tickets.

BABEL

The cultural programme Babel gives writers and thinkers the chance to speak on the subject of ‘utopia’. Guests include Benno Barnard, who on Thursday 1 September will be giving his interpretation of Thomas More’s reference work ‘Utopia’. On Tuesday 6 September Johan Pas will be presenting the ideas of the Dutch painter Constant, who in his work ‘New Babylon’ developed the idea of a utopian city. While on Wednesday 7 September Paul De Grauwe will be taking a look at the notion of utopia from an economic perspective. Babel will also be presenting interviews with musicians who can be heard during the KlaraFestival. For example, on 9 September Stijn Meuris will be sharing his thoughts on the Dez Mona concert, who will be adopting a baroque style for the occasion.

CAFE ZIMMERMANN

Café Zimmermann will be presenting a musical portrait of festival stars René Jacobs, Daniël Hope and Roger Norrington.

MEESTERWERK

On 3 September on Meesterwerk, Liesbeth Devos will be discussing Benjamin Britten’s 'Les Illuminations'. On Saturday 10 September Chantal De Waele will be talking to the violinist Jenny Spanoghe about violin sonata no.1 in G op.78 by Johannes Brahms.

TRIO

In the studio for Trio on Saturday 3 September Werner Trio will de discussing the subject of utopia with two special guests. Two philosophers will be presenting utopia as they imagine it: in 2002 the historian philosopher Luuk van Middelaar compiled the Yearbook of the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation: 'Utopia. Utopian Thinking, Acting and Building in the 20th century.” He is the winner of numerous awards, including the Prix de Paris, the Liberty Award from Nova Civitas and the Socrates-Wisselbeker Award, for Passage to Europe. He is currently working at the cabinet of European President Herman Van Rompuy. Tim De Mey (UGent, Erasmus University Rotterdam) is also in the running for awards for his new book: 'Possible Worlds: A (Meta)Philosophical Travel Guide)'. This deals with the mobilising force of counterfactual thinking and the imagination, and the philosophers’ paradise.

LISZT FOR LIFE

This year Klara and the KlaraFestival are celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Franz Liszt. Sunday evenings between 6 and 8 pm from 4 September to 23 October inclusive Klara is presenting the series Liszt for Life. A series that will be taking a deeper look at he life and work of Liszt in the company of eminent experts.

BERG EN DAL

On 4 September on Berg en Dal, Pat Donnez’ guest is theatre-maker Jan Decorte who will himself be taking to the stage during the KlaraFestival. Performing on piano and conducted by Claire Chevalier, in 'Liszt/O Death' he makes the connection between the Greek tragic poet Aischylos and Franz Liszt.
